Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Firestorm Greg Keyes 9781783292257 Books

An ok prequel that continues after the superb movie, but it goes off on a few different tangents as well as dealing with too much human drama, when it should be more about the Apes. Decent, but not great.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Firestorm Greg Keyes 9781783292257 Books Reviews

I have always enjoyed the Planet of the Apes movies and books. Greg Keyes is my favorite author of this fictional world. This is my second time reading Firestorm and I enjoyed it very much.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and it was quite an exercise in dealing with inner fears regarding the recent introduction of Ebola to the US! I found the character developments engaging, particularly around Koba. I watched Rise of POA again and the film was richer for having read the book. I'm looking forward to watching Dawn of POA again next week! I would have given 5 stars, but there was an abundance of typos! I loved the author's writing, and he should hire a better proofreader...like me!
This was a great book! If you are a Planet of the Apes fan you should definitely read it. Like many other reviews have said, there are several stories going on at once, but that actually turned out to be entertaining. Some of the highlights include a good backstory on Koba, a story about a man named Malakai who is hired to hunt Ceasar’s Troop, the introduction of Dreyfus who we see in Dawn, and how Caesar leads the Apes ultimately to safety in the end.
I couldn't put her down. I would never have even considered this kind of piece save for the fact he wrote the novelization of Interstellar and I liked his style. I was once again surprised and taken away when very few authors have been able to do that for me lately. This had some of my favorite topics like a plague, destruction, a possible apocalypse and dystopian future at least for humans. Though after the way humans treated the animals in this book it seems a fitting end for us as a species.
bought this one along with the other Dawn Of The Planret of The Apes and wasn't sure which to read first. The difference is that this one picks up 5 days after the movie Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes whereas the other Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (which is definetely worth reading, as well) goes by the movie, 10 winters after the Rise movie. This book was fantastic! It showed you how the apes learned to understand what was going on, and why they were beginning to think better. The only problem I had with this book was finishing it! This was a book that when I was through with it, I was disappointed because I didn't want it to end! If you are borderline about reading this book and trying to decide whether or not to buy it, my advice is-GO FOR IT! You won't be sorry!
A fantastic bridge between Rise and Dawn. If you want to see the early days of Caesar's leadership after the apes escaped into Muir Woods and if you want some more background information on Koba and his past, this is the book for you. It also covers Dreyfus's rise to power, the spread of the simian flu, the resulting fallout, and goes into depth as to why the humans at first assume the apes have died out by the beginning of Dawn.

My only complaint is the complaint I have with most things attached to the POTAs series-- an extreme shortage of active women characters. We get a tiny taste of it with Cornelia, Talia, and Clancy in this book, but almost all of their actions revolve around men and how they relate to them (and of them only Cornelia survives). Don't get me wrong, I love POTAs, but it'd be nice to see just as many women as there are men while having some of them in leadership positions or-- at the very least-- being taken as seriously as the men. (Then again it'd be nice to see some non-binary people too, but as rare as that is in fiction not seeing any doesn't surprise me.)
The authorized sequel to the Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie (2011) and prequel to the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes movie (2014). This is the story of the Simian Flu pandemic that kills almost all humans and ends human civilization. It begins in San Francisco five days after Rise ends and the city prepares for a mayoral election, presenting five interlocking stories those of the apes under Caesar to reach a place of safety; of a human team sent to catch them, including primatologist Clancy Stoppard and a Congo expert ape tracker, Malakai Youmans; Dr. Natalia Kosar of one of San Francisco’s major hospitals, who is the first to get patients of the new plague; former police chief Dreyfus, the mayoral challenger; and the biography of the chimpanzee Koba, one of Caesar’s lieutenants. As the humans die and dwindle, San Francisco is thrown into panic and desperation. A harrowing story, well told.
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Firestorm" bridges the gap between the movie "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," showing what happened to Caesar and the others after their escape into the woods and also showing the spread of the Simian Flu through the human population.

Two primary problems with this book one, it's a very short book, more a novella, the spread of the flu really could have encompassed a much larger novel, but maybe wasn't possible due to the second problem, which is that if you have already seen "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," then this story is rather anticlimactic. If the characters you're reading about aren't in the follow-up movie, well, then, it seems their fates are already determined. It was hard to get invested in their stories when you already know their ending.

That being said, if you're a fan of post-apocalyptic or during-apocalyptic stories, this is an interesting read.
An ok prequel that continues after the superb movie, but it goes off on a few different tangents as well as dealing with too much human drama, when it should be more about the Apes. Decent, but not great.
