Part coming of age story, part suspense novel, this is definitely not the Dean Koontz I recall from earlier novels.

I really wasn't sure what to think when I began reading this novel. I have had good and bad feelings about the work of this author in the past. Sometimes his work would surprise and thrill me and yet other times I would come away feeling like I just didn't get it. This novel, was a little bit of both.

If I had to choose what I liked about this novel and sum it up in a single paragraph, it would be that it is different and a bit unexpected. The writing is superb and the descriptions did not run away with the story as I have noticed in some of his other works. This was a new direction for Mr. Koontz to take his readers, and for the most part I thought it worked.

I won't go so far as to say that every second of this book was exciting, but it was a thoughtful tale and had a lot of fully formed, independent characters that all added to the story. There was still some suspense and some tense moments as with his other works.

Overall, I gave this book three stars for being an example of an author taking a risk and making it work. If you are a fan of the older Koontz novels, this may strike you as a bit of an oddity but I encourage you to give it a shot.

I own everything that Dean Koontz has ever had published....and he is definitely one of my top 5 favorite writers. I have thoroughly enjoyed all his books, except for 2 of them - the one that came out after his dog Trixie died (can't remember the name now) and this one. I seemed to spend the first 3/4's of the book waiting for something to happen and thought about setting it aside a number of times. It's possible that it was my own expectations of what a Koontz novel 'should' be like that colored my expectations, but it just seemed to go nowhere for a very long time. Once it got to the last quarter of the book, it proceeded like a typical Koontz novel, in that I couldn't put it down until it was finished.

This story is definitely an atypical Koontz plot and feel - and far more psychological than other-worldly. Perhaps it is a natural evolution of his writing style and subject matter, which in many ways is welcome to me (horror is not as appealing to me now, as it was in my younger days). All this said, I'd still recommend The City - just read it without expecting it to be like his other books.
This is my first experience with a Dean Koontz novel and I really enjoyed the book. He builds the tension and carries it off very well. There were surprises around every corner of the city.
I enjoyed the nostalgia of the novel as well because the setting was the era of my childhood as well. It brought back many memories of my own childhood in a large city.
Mr Koontz is not only a good storyteller but a gifted writer as well and I laud his artistry in this book. His way of telling this story was amazing as he took interesting twists and turns through Jonah's coming of age as he tries to deal with adult situations and matures prematurely and the adults who help and hinder his journey.
Fiona and Lucas are truly creepy characters that used the movements of the Vietnam War era to fulfill their own twisted psychotic fantasies with a nefarious Sancho Panza in the form of Smaller and Tilton as a wannabe hanger-on.
Miss Pearl adds a supernatural touch and by the end of the book, maybe she is a guardian angel in disguise.
It was refreshing to see noble characters like Grandpa Teddy, Mr Yoshioka, Sylvia, and Amalia who turn their pain as opportunities for growth. I found that while there were tragedies in the novel there was spiritual growth. Jonah was blessed with inspiring role models.
I highly recommend it and will be looking to reading more of Mr Koontz work.
This is a tale that is somehow mysterious and elusive, even in the rich details of each moment experienced by the protagonist – a young black boy living in the heart of The City. Koontz has always had a way of weaving a tale in such a way as to drag us into the story, to walk the streets alongside the characters.

At first I was unsure whether I liked the story, as it sometimes seems to drag along, but I soon realized that this built the attitudes, experiences, and expectations of young Jonah. As this young man walks through his ninth year, he gains friends, who join him on a special journey. Each character is slowly developed throughout the story, as we learn surprising things about their lives that affect their decisions now.

There is some excitement near the end, and I shed a few tears, though it doesn't end bad – that is important to me.

My verdict is, this is an interesting read, and the prequel, "The Neighbor," involves some important friends of Jonah's, and is creepy and a little scary, and left my heart racing. It's a short story, that was just the right length for this spine-chilling tale.

I love Dean Koontz, and this story struck me as a little different, even considering his normal fare. Pick it up – you'll find that you can't actually put it down.
