Lunch Wars How to Start a School Food Revolution and Win the Battle for Our Children Health Amy Kalafa 9781585428625 Books
I have long been frustrated with the state of food in our country, and the school food more recently as my children become school aged. With a horrible food culture within our own local school (candy food rewards and daily treats the norm), I have been frustrated by the closing of doors when I attempt to open dialog about different options out there. This book gives me loads of ideas on how to keep plugging away and garnering support to work toward making change within our own school community. Lunch Wars How to Start a School Food Revolution and Win the Battle for Our Children Health Amy Kalafa 9781585428625 Books Reviews
A very comprehensive look at the history of the school lunch program in America both past and present and how to get involved in starting a school food revolution in your own district. Kalafa's reporting is an eye-opener, especially if you are among the any parents who are ignorant as to who's sourcing the food your kid's school is serving, what the actual ingredients are, and how it's being marketed. Kalafa, a documentary filmmaker, started the movement Two Angry Moms ([...]) as a cry against what was happening in her own kid's school. Kalafa reminds us over and over again, the importance of proper nutrition to the health, well-being, and yes scholastic performance of our children. She gives many examples of average people attempting to make positive changes to what their districts are serving for lunch and reminds us that even the minutest changes are reason to celebrate. This book is chock full of ideas on how parents can get involved in their kids lunch program starting with finding out exactly what is being served, where it comes from, and who has the biggest interest in keeping the status quo. Yes, sometimes there is a lot of political red tape to muddle through but there are more and more grass roots efforts across the country introducing a local, organic, and sustainable menu cooked from scratch. Three of the most important lessons that you can take away is that you need to be realistic about what is feasible in your own district while believing that anything is possible, and realizing that sometimes change can take a very long time.
I am half way through this book and have found it compelling and helpful.
But, don't listen to me--listen to what a real book review magazine--Kirkus Reviews--has to say about the book
"Most readers are already convinced that the highly processed, minimally nutritious goop sitting atop their child's lunch tray must be replaced with real food. But how?
The author's well-researched book has the answers. As anyone who has even contemplated taking on the Byzantine institution that is the National School Lunch Program knows, the odds of actually upending the system are slim. The predominance of obsequious clods at the levers of power and the lack of adequate funding make any change seem almost impossible. Junk-food conglomerates have long ago succeeded in casting kids in the role of nascent consumers--and the choices they offer are all bad.
Buoyed by extensive case studies that both inform and inspire, Kalafa's how-to guide covers all the bases from networking with local organic farmers to writing successful RFPs (Request for Proposals). Whether the overall goal is simply to bump some greasy fries off the school menu or to have a totally new kitchen installed for from-scratch cooking, no lunchroom revolutionary should be without this battlefield manual. The good news is that, nationwide, parents and other concerned citizens are scoring victories in the battle to bring nutritious, whole food to the school-lunch menu. You can too.
Painstakingly researched and detailed blueprint for building a better school lunchroom today."
A number of books have been written on the topic of school lunch reform. "Lunch Wars" is a very poor addition to the collection.
The book lacks a clear focus and consistent message. For example, at various points in the book the author advises concerned parents to take a first step by contacting their local school food service director; next to take a first step by contacting other parents and meeting with the school board; next to take a first step by visiting the cafeteria, taking photos and setting up a web site. There are similar issues where first she champions cooking from scratch at local schools in one chapter and later tells us that chefs recommend cooking from large central facilities in anoather. The National School Lunch Program is praised as the most successful public welfare program in American history and then vilified as a provider of junk food.
Full funding of the school meal programs is especially poorly covered. Model programs she praises generally admit that they have substantial outside funding, charge two or three times the national average lunch price and/or run at a substantial deficit. There is no guide for ways to address this critical issue in any kind of useful way.
Although there is a small footnote section in the back, extravagant claims are made without any appropriate references. This leads to pseudo-information substituting for genuine research and facts that could be used for decision-making. Some of this includes claiming that some foods contain "anti-nutrients" that absorb the good nurtients in food and that children today are lazy because their food "has a lack of life force in calories." She states that skim milk makes children fat while whole milk makes children less obese.
Some of her examples border on the absurd. She praises one school in the Hamptons, with a tuition of over $30,000 yearly where she observes children eating a lunch of braised duck ragout while "dressed head to toe in velvet Renaissance-era costumes." In another section, she arrives at a school meeting with a sign showing a picture of tater tots topped by a skull and cross-bones and marked "Danger-Harmful If Swallowed."
Other times, these examples turn from accidently funny to absolute untruths. She states that children are eating foods that are "toxic" which would mean that they would actually poison a child to death if ingested. And in one particularly insensitive and cruel statement she states that "Food we are giving our children is going to wind up killing more children than any gunman this year." I hope that even the harshest critic of school meals does not truly believe that any children will actually die during the course of the next school year from eating a lunch at their school.
In closing, I cannot recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic of school lunch reform.
Great and surprising book. Wow...hard to believe!
